A-weighting

« Back to Glossary Index

The standard equal loudness corrected weighting applied to sound level meters; a contour based method of compensation for the human ear’s frequency sensitivity and perception of relative loudness in measuring sound pressure levels. A-weighting is one of four curves used to arithmetically table instrument measured sound pressure levels. Octave band measurements (octave or third octave bands) are arithmetically tabled and logarithmically added to produce a measurement:  A-weighed values are written as dB(A).

Originally developed to measure low level and low frequency sound. Uses include measuring environmental and industrial noise, and hearing damage risk assessment and OH&WS.
