Azimuth is a term used in both psychoacoustics and electroacoustics. In tape recording (audio or data) azimuth refers to the angle of a recording or playback head and the left/right movement of the audio head; head gaps should be aligned in uniform contact perpendicular to the tape to minimise cross-talk.
In psychoacoustics azimuth describes direction or angular displacement of a sound in a horizontal plane; this can have applications for spatialisation in surround mixes, ambisonic speaker environments, games engines, or VR.
